Hi, I'm Kara.

And it might surprise you to learn that for about ten years, I experimented with nicotine. Yes. You read that right.

I told myself I could stop at any time until one day, I couldn't. Sound familiar?

I focused on the very thing that had a hold on me and got my Masters of Public Health at the University of Edinburgh. I became the Director of QuitNow, one of Canada's most recognized tobacco/vaping cessation programs.

During my 15 years in this work, I:

  • Wrote/taught the best, science-backed ways to quit for medical practice
  • Lead the development of the first government vaping cessation services in Canada
  • Quit nicotine products completely

FAQs

I don’t feeI ready to quit now. Does this mean I shouldn't?

It’s completely natural and okay to feel this way. This is because the addictive part of your brain will do whatever it can to convince you not to quit, by telling you you’re not ready now, and probably never will be. The truth is, the real you is always ready. Subconsciously, you know the price you’ve been paying when you vape. What you may no know is that you already possess the courage and determination needed to make the change. The feeling of readiness may actually never come on its own. Instead, it's about taking that leap and realizing that now is the best time. The first part of the program helps you recognize that you want to quit and are truly ready. Your potential for change is already within you, and with my coaching we can unlock it together.

Why should I work with a coach when I can quit on my own?

Great question! You’ve probably heard the word “coach” thrown around a lot these days. So how is it relevant to quitting vaping? Well, when it comes to quitting vaping, many people find it incredibly challenging to quit on their own. Going solo can be frustrating and isolating, and isn’t the most effective. Having worked in this space for many years, I’ve designed this program to make the quitting process easier. You not only will get to work directly with me, your dedicated and supportive expert. Together we won’t just focus on vaping; we will look at understanding and dismantling the whole underlying addiction. I will help you  build confidence and momentum that you can leverage to other areas of your life. My approach recognizes that everyone is unique and tailors the strategies to fit your specific needs, helping you quit in the most comfortable, natural, and long-lasting way. 

I quit smoking by vaping and now am struggling to quit vaping. Is this the right program?

Vaping was introduced as a way to quit smoking and lots of people used it in this way. Not so many people were then able to quit vaping. Quitting vaping is a different experience from quitting smoking. While vaping shares many similarities with smoking, it was designed to be the "perfect" alternative by removing some of the unpleasant aspects of smoking. For example, vaping doesn’t smell as bad, it's smoother, cheaper, more discreet and convenient, and you can vape in many places where you can’t smoke. Consequently, many people find themselves vaping more often and finding it harder to quit. The good news is that we can leverage your successful tobacco quit to help you achieve a full nicotine quit.

 What if I enjoy vaping and am scared to quit and lose that enjoyment?

It's entirely normal to find enjoyment in vaping. If you didn’t feel like you enjoyed some aspect, you wouldn't be struggling to quit! The satisfaction however, is an illusion from the addiction. Lots of people describe nicotine as “a good friend”. As we work together,  you’ll uncover how this “friend” has actually wrongly convinced you that you enjoy your time together. You’ll  begin to realize that what you once thought of as enjoyment was often just the relief of withdrawal symptoms caused by vaping itself. Once you start to get closer to quitting your body will start to return back to normal, and you’ll enjoy things in life you hadn’t noticed when you were focused on vaping, feeling more enjoyment day to day.

Coaching costs money, why should I pay for this program when I'm trying to save money?

While this program does come with a cost, so does vaping. The average person spends thousands of dollars on vaping over the years. Why not spend some of that on an effective program that carries a one-time cost to better your health and save you from the ongoing cost of vaping. Consider it as an investment that can lead to significant cost savings over time, which can far outweigh the cost of coaching. And it might be worth pondering, "What would you pay to be free from vaping addiction?" The cost of coaching, when compared to the long-term benefits you'll gain, can often be seen as a small price to pay for regaining control over your life and breaking free from addiction.

I’ve tried to quit vaping before and failed. How is this program any different from what I’ve tried before?

That’s normal! It's common to have tried quitting before and faced challenges along the way. Vaping addiction can be tough to overcome, and withdrawal symptoms can be enough to send you back to vaping. This program is unlike any other method, and it offers a guided approach that's designed so you don’t feel strong withdrawals and gives your body and mind the time to adjust. It’s done gradually and naturally and we work on your mindset as we go along. This increases your chances of success, even if you've struggled in the past. We learn from your past attempts, they contain great insights and we use them to help you quit now.

Will I ever be free of cravings when quitting vaping?

Yes! When you first think about quitting you may feel that you’ll always have vaping top of mind. Why would you want to quit if you’re to experience a lifetime of wanting what you can’t have? This is another illusion of the addicted brain that can keep you from ever believing you can be truly free of vaping. Cravings are a common part of the quitting process, but with my guidance, I’ll show you how to manage and avoid cravings and over time you’ll notice the cravings will reduce. Remember that each person's experience is unique, but my program can help you get to a point where cravings no longer exist and you don’t even think about your vape anymore.

 I'm young, and by the law, I'm technically underage to be vaping in my country. Does this mean I can’t apply to the program?

I want to be clear that I do not condone or encourage underage drinking, nicotine use, or illegal drug use, or any other illegal behaviour. At this time, the program is only offered to those who are of legal age in their country. It is, however, important to recognize that the majority of people start using nicotine before the age of 18, and young people, like anyone else, deserve support rather than judgment when trying to quit. In the future, the program will be developed to be available to individuals of all ages.
